Last year on holidays in Indonesia I was impressed by how persistent the locals were with asking for business. They were very entrepreneurial.

One chap saw us go up to the hotel’s snorkeling counter to see what tours were available. The counter was unattended and he seized the opportunity to ask us if we wanted to go snorkeling around the islands.

He clarified that he had his own boat and business and could provide a better service at half the price. I admired his proactive approach. We took him up on his offer and had a great time.

It was an easy sale. He was in the right place and saw people who would very likely be interested in his business offering.

It made me think about how often we get in our own way of getting business. How often do we avoid asking for the sale? Of course not everyone will want to buy, but as a business we need to understand that that’s okay. Not everyone may need your product or service or be ready to complete the transaction.

But if you don’t ask, you don’t get.

No doubt the fear of rejection lies very close to the surface of why we avoid asking. But if we are prepared to hear the no’s then asking becomes less confronting. It’s okay to hear a no, or a not now.

But if you don’t ask, you don’t get.

When making videos there needs to be a clear strategy. Why are you making the video and what is “the ask” that needs to be attached to the video. This is often called the call to action. It may not be about buying your product or service, but it may be to visit the website or make a phone call to find out more.

If that is your call to action, or your ask, then make sure it is easy for your customers to do. Include the link to your website in the email or social media post where you share the video. Or put it in the comments section of your YouTube video.

Not everyone will click the link, but if you do it properly and target the right audience then some will.
