With the high definition cameras we carry around in our pocket and purses, there has never been a better time to leverage the power of video.

Although here at Sonic Sight we specialise in producing high quality videos, we also recognise the value of creating useful videos simply and quickly on your phone.

I place videos into three categories: Commercial, Community and Casual.

Commercial quality is the high end promotional videos that showcase your organisation in its best light. It’s impressive. It could be a corporate video or a TV commercial.

Community quality videos are reasonable quality videos that are used to engage with those who are already part of your community. This includes your clients, your suppliers, your staff and those within your social media networks. They are also good quality but don’t need all the bells and whistles.

Casual videos are generally shot on your phone. They are simple, and in a way they are disposable. They are shared online shortly after they have been shot and usually offer one clear message.

The beauty of casual videos are they generally don’t cost anything to produce. They are quick to make and easy to share.

They allow you to keep engaged with your social media network in a casual style. This doesn’t mean however you need to compromise your brand image. Even though the videos are simple they can still reflect your brand, who you are and what you stand for.

For example a school may post a short video of the students at a carnival. It might be the students cheering on their fellow team mates. It can be quick and simple and show the students engaging, supporting each other and being competitive.

The audience would be the Facebook followers of the organisation; so most likely parents and friends of the school. The purpose of the video is to simply show what’s happening during the day and keep the community engaged.

I had the pleasure of catching up with a colleague Edward Zia recently. He commits to producing at least 2 to 3 of these “casual” videos each day. His videos are quick, simple and highly useful. They usually contain a simple tip on how to better market your business and occasionally there will be a call to action to register for one of his regular events.

This prolific production of regular videos has enabled Edward to build up a solid, engaged audience that convert into customers. When asked about his Return on Investment (ROI) with this strategy Edward struggled to quantify it. He was able to relate to around $5,000 new business a month directly because of this strategy yet it was costing him nothing to produce, apart from about 5-10 minutes per video.

There are plenty of ways to use these casual videos to stay engaged with your community and sell your services. Car dealers can pick up the phone and showcase the best used car of the week. Real estate agents can provide tips to maximise the sale of your home. Mortgage brokers can provide tips on how to save your deposit. If you are being paid for a service or a product then you have useful, interesting insights to share with your community.

Although they aren’t seen as “professional”, the real value these casual videos provide is creating rapport with your audience. In an age where processes are automated and people to people communication has been replaced with field merge applications, seeing a real person being real is quite refreshing.

Videos such as these enable your viewers to connect with the people behind the business. They help build trust because they are clearly raw and genuine clips.

Of course a lot of people worry about producing such content. They are concerned they are not good at presenting. I understand these concerns. It does take practice, and the beauty of video is you can practice. You will get better each time.

If you stuff up a take, then have another go and delete the versions that don’t work. Over time you will improve and the more regularly you post your content the more your audience and following will build.
